General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) has won the tender announced by the German Ministry of Defence (BAAINBw) and signed a contract to produce a next-generation reconnaissance vehicle for the Bundeswehr. Valued at approximately €3 billion, this contract is a key part of Germany’s efforts to modernize its ground forces.
The new vehicle, named “LUCHS 2,” will be based on GDELS’ latest PIRANHA 6×6 amphibious armored vehicle. LUCHS 2 will replace the current FENNEK 4×4 reconnaissance vehicle and will be equipped with advanced sensor technologies, superior mobility, and low acoustic and thermal signatures. In addition, the vehicles will be integrated with the digital communication infrastructure D-LBO system.

Under the contract, an initial batch of 274 LUCHS 2 vehicles will be ordered, with an option for an additional 82 vehicles. The first deliveries are scheduled for 2028. Deliveries will take place at GDELS’ facilities in Germany, with the production process aimed at enhancing Germany’s defense industry capabilities.
The contract also includes training systems, simulators, and logistics support services. This comprehensive approach aims to increase the operational effectiveness of LUCHS 2 and strengthen the Bundeswehr’s reconnaissance capabilities.
The development of LUCHS 2 is considered a critical step in Germany’s “Zeitenwende” defense strategy, focusing on the digitalization and modernization of ground forces. The project represents a major milestone in Germany’s efforts to increase its defense budget and strengthen military capabilities in Europe.
Winning this contract reinforces GDELS’ leadership in the European defense market while strengthening Germany’s defense industry partnerships.
