Sweden has announced a new procurement of IRIS-T SLS (Short-Range Surface-Launched) air defence systems, marking a continuation of its ongoing efforts to strengthen national air defence capabilities. The announcement, made on November 25, 2025, by Defence Minister Pål Jonson at the Air Defence Regiment in Halmstad (Lv 6), highlights Sweden’s commitment to addressing modern aerial threats and expanding the operational readiness of its armed forces.

The new procurement builds on previous acquisitions that have formed the backbone of Sweden’s brigade-level air defence. Earlier, under a SEK 9 billion contract facilitated by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), Sweden procured seven IRIS-T SLM (Surface-Launched Medium-Range) systems from German manufacturer Diehl. These medium-range systems, scheduled for delivery beginning in 2028, complement existing assets including the IRIS-T SLS and the RBS 70 and Patriot systems, providing layered protection against fighter jets, helicopters, drones, and cruise missiles.

According to Minister Jonson, “Sweden’s defence needs to be capable of countering threats from missiles, drones, and helicopters. Investing in our armed forces is the best way to guarantee peace and freedom.” He further emphasized that the procurement also supports domestic growth, job creation, and increased production capacity within the defence industry.

The latest order, valued at SEK 2 billion for the IRIS-T SLS launch units and an additional SEK 1.5 billion for vehicles and integration systems, is intended for deployment in the Norrbotten Regiment (I 19) and Skaraborg Regiment (P 4). These units will equip four platoons with short-range air defence capabilities, enhancing Sweden’s brigade-level protection. The package includes 16 missile launchers, eight short-range radar systems (G1x), platoon and company command vehicles, modifications of existing tracked IRIS-T SLS systems, and associated support elements including spare parts and training.

This acquisition is part of a broader Swedish air defence modernization effort. Over the past year, Sweden has invested in multiple systems, including CAMM missiles, anti-drone technology, the IRIS-T SLM medium-range system, and expanded capabilities for the Gripen fighter aircraft. Lessons learned from Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine have underscored the need for robust air defence capabilities, a factor that has strongly influenced Sweden’s procurement strategy.

The IRIS-T SLS system itself provides highly effective short-range protection, capable of engaging multiple aerial threats simultaneously. Its radar-guided missiles and advanced tracking technology ensure protection of both ground troops and critical infrastructure. Combined with medium-range IRIS-T SLM systems, Sweden’s air defence network is designed to offer comprehensive, layered coverage of its airspace.

By integrating these new units into the Army’s brigades, Sweden continues to reinforce its long-term air defence strategy, ensuring both deterrence and operational readiness in the face of evolving aerial threats. The ongoing expansion of air defence capabilities demonstrates a consistent approach to strategic modernization, technological advancement, and collaboration with European defence partners.
