Sweden, through its Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), has placed an order for 94 additional Patria 6×6 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) under the Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) multinational programme. The supplementary order, valued at approximately SEK 1.5 billion, includes troop transport, command, and medical evacuation variants.

“The Swedish Armed Forces have spent the past one and a half years training and evaluating the system and are very satisfied. With the previously delivered weapon stations and smoke systems, we now achieve full operational capability,” said Håkan Larsson, FMV project manager.

This latest order follows a 2024 procurement of 321 Patria 6×6 vehicles, bringing the total number to 415 units scheduled for delivery to the Swedish Armed Forces between 2025 and 2030. To date, 14 vehicles have already been delivered, in addition to a 20-vehicle pre-series that has been operational for the past 18 months.

The CAVS programme, which began in 2020, is a collaborative initiative aimed at developing a state-of-the-art 6×6 armoured vehicle system that meets the common requirements of participating nations. Initially founded by Finland and Latvia, the programme now includes Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Norway, and the United Kingdom, with opportunities for other countries to join under agreed conditions.

By pooling resources and leveraging local industry capabilities, the CAVS programme seeks to enhance mutual defence resilience, reduce costs through joint procurement, and promote interoperability among European and NATO forces. The modular design of the Patria 6×6 allows it to perform multiple roles, including troop transport, medical evacuation, command and control, logistical support, reconnaissance, and combat operations, ensuring versatility across a wide range of operational scenarios.

The Patria 6×6 features STANAG level 2 ballistic and mine protection, with optional upgrades to level 4, and can carry up to 12 personnel, including crew, along with their equipment for missions lasting up to 72 hours. The vehicle’s robust independent suspension, high-performance drivetrain, and all-wheel steering provide exceptional mobility, with optional amphibious capabilities for water crossings and landings. Designed with cost-effectiveness and long-term reliability in mind, the Patria 6×6 offers a truck-like user interface and low maintenance requirements, supporting an expected service life of over 30 years.

This order reinforces Sweden’s commitment to modernizing its armoured vehicle fleet while contributing to multinational defence collaboration in Europe.
